Mother’s Day in Japan


Mother’s Day is one of the many holidays that is celebrated in Japan as well as in the United States. The Showa period was when it all started to commemorate the birthday of the Empress Kojin the mother of Emperor Akihito. Nowadays the holiday is celebrated here in Japan very much like it is celebrated in the United States. Husbands and children purchase gifts for their mothers and spend time with them. A typical gift for mother on Mother’s Day is flowers such as red carnations and red roses.

Although giving gifts is popular at this time of year is also a time for sales at department stores. Sales are typically on items used by mothers such as clothes or other goods. So while you’re in Japan don’t forget to purchase your mother something nice for Mother’s day.
